Who
Are We?
Established
in 1979, the Dallas Trekkers exists to promote non-competitive walking
and other family oriented sports activities. We sponsor about
eight scheduled walking events annually that are open to anyone who
wants to walk. That's right...you don't have to be a member to walk
with us! (Although we'd love to have you!) We also sponsor nine year-round
trails around the Dallas metroplex. These events are open most every
day of the year and you can do them by yourself or with a group. Participants
at our events are athletes and non-athletes alike. Why, you're likely
to see everyone from Grandma and Grandpa to babies in strollers.
Even
the family dog tags along.
Our events are also unique
because, on completion, everyone is declared a winner!
Are
the Dallas Trekkers the only ones doing this?
The Dallas Trekkers are
affiliated with the Texas
Volkssporting Association (TVA) under the American
Volkssport Association
(AVA), who are in turn under a much larger international organization,
the International Federation of
People's Sports (IVV). The word Volkssport comes
from a German term that literally means "sport of the people."
Besides the Dallas Trekkers,
there are more than 300
other volkssporting clubs in the United States who sponsor
hundreds of events
each year. Our events aren't just limited to walking either! The
various clubs also sponsor swimming, bicycling and skiing events
throughout the year. In some areas, Rollerblading is now a sanctioned
event.
As a bonus, participants
to Volkssporting events may enroll in an awards program by purchasing
an Events Record and Distance
books. Upon completion of milestones, the participant receives
a certificate, pin
and patch. You'll experience a
great sense of pride as you complete each milestone knowing that
you've reached your goal. At some events you may optionally receive
a commemorative award for a small
registration fee. It's surprising what an incentive it is to walk
when there are small rewards at the end of the trail. It's like
patting yourself on the back for "a job well done."
Continued participation
earns awards for completion of 10, 30, and 50 events, and for every
25 events after that. Distance awards are earned for every 500 kilometers
(approximately 310 miles completed). Because the Volkssporting program
is international, if you happen to attend an event in a foreign
country, you can accumulate credits there as well.
Why
should I walk?
It's obvious, that as
exercise, walking has health benefits. In addition, you'll find
opportunities to travel and meet many friendly and interesting people
from all areas of life. You'll see sights that you would normally
miss zooming by in a car. Typically one of our walks leads the participants
through pretty residential areas, parks, natural areas and historical
sites.
Do
I have to be a member to participate?
No, but members of the
Dallas Trekkers receive the club newsletter.
It's packed with information about upcoming events, year round events,
news, and meeting announcements not just for Dallas, but for the
entire Metroplex and State of Texas! New members also receive their
choice of one Dallas Trekkers club
patch or a club pin free. Additional pins and patches may
be purchased. And your club participation helps us to continue to
sponsor great walking events all year long!
